This Sunday April 3rd 2016 is event #1 in the Pikes Peak International Raceway Time Attack/Open Drift season series. The track president and his staff design different course layouts every event and utilize part of the ovals and infield course. Classes are broken up by drivetrain (FWD, AWD, RWD) and its a great way to drive fast with friends.
It doesn’t matter what you drive - if you’re an enthusiast come track your car! My brother and I have been racing at the PPIR events over the local SCCA/BMWCCA events since last year and have not looked back (autocross got old fast when you burn an entire day for maybe 4 minutes of total seat time).

I don’t think a ‘95 Dakota 4x4 with sketchy suspension and exhaust-by-baling-wire would be good for autocross. Not to mention it likes to relieve itself of certain fluids at random.
When I get the IROC done, I’ll come down to PPIR for sure :)

This is highly interesting. Hadn’t heard of this before, only the Rocky Mountain Solo autocross.
I LIKE IT. Do I just show up on Sunday ready to race or is there a pre-registration?

My dad ran the last event in his grand Cherokee and people run pickups all the time! 96.1 is giving away spectator passes all week too if you want to come hang out or ride along for a bit

Details are in the link but yes - just show up! Tech and mandatory drivers meeting at 0845, if you miss either you can't race. We will probably be stopping for breakfast on the way down, let me know if you plan on making it!

I may be down there to spectate. I’d love to take the Bavaria out there but I need new pads and a bleed.

I know trucks are run but mine isn’t in any condition for competition just yet. My exhaust is actually hung by baling wire and portions are held together with HVAC tape. The suspension is 190k and a major impact old. I just wouldn’t subject the track and other competitors to my possible ejection of fluids and parts
As for coming down, we may just do that regardless. Either the wife can enjoy the show or visit her sister while I watch :)

Awesome, I think I will plan on heading down Sunday! It’ll give me a good opportunity to test out my new tires & brakes.

How many runs does a driver generally get at an event?

It depends on how many entrants are there and how fast the course can be run without stopping to reset cones/timing equipment, but the last event I had 6 runs in before lunch and 6 after lunch. I even left about two hours early.
Bring a helmet otherwise you’ll have to rent one from the venue.

Awesome, just wanted to check how much bang I’m getting for my buck. Sounds good.

Best part: You don’t have to work the course. The entrance fee covers PPIR staff that run timing, corners, flags and cones. I usually bring a cooler of drinks, the DSLR and chairs (and sometimes the dog)

Yeah I’m pretty excited about this now. Is there a group caravaning down to PPIR from Denver?

We are coming in from the Springs but there is usually a group of Denver folks - I'll see if I can coordinate it

A few quick tips to make sure your day at PPIR goes smoothly:
* Make sure to read through the tech inspection card to ensure that your car and your helmet are ready to go for the day. If anything is found to not meet the requirements, you will not be able to drive!
* Check your tires after every run. If a tire blows-out during a run it is possible to damage your car in numerous ways, if you see chords it’s time to switch out wheels/tires.
* Use the donut box to sharpen your car control skills throughout the day.

I don’t think i’ll be making this one since my car currently doesn’t have injectors or a header, but hopefully will make the May 1st event. Also hope to make a couple Track Night in America events at HPR this year.
